Introduction
The Government implements several poverty alleviation projects after the independent. In order to this Samurdthi Development is the one of the poverty alleviation project which have introduced past decade. This Project has three major programs which are following;
¨ Banking Activities
¨ Dry Ration Program
¨ Project ( Infrastructure & Livelihood )
In Valikamam West Divisional Secretariat 8,244 families are attached to the Samurdthi Small groups. Each 8 groups are formed a society for the particular village level development.
Banking Activities
Beside the divisional level Samurdthi activities; Maha sanga and Samurdthi Bank Societies are implementing Deposits, Savings and Credit activities in divisional level. There are two Samurdthi Banks are functioning in Vali West Divisional Secretariat area. The Vaddukkoddai Bank covers the Grama Niladhari division from J/157, Vaddu East to J/168, Tholpuram East. Vadakkamparai Bank covers the Grama Niladhari division from J/169, Tholpuram West to J/181, Chankanai Centre.
Samurdthi Dry Ration
Another major Samurdthi activity is distribution of dry ration for the people who are living below poverty level. There are 3,637 families are getting Samurdthi dry ration in our division.

Stamp value of dry ration beneficiaries Rs. 1,500/- , 2500/-,3500/- can eligible to get for the social security benefits under their family members Birth, Death, Maternity and Diseases.
The category benefits are following;
- Death - Rs.15,000
- Wedding - Rs. 7,500
- Birth - Rs. 7,500
- Illness – more than 5 days admitted in hospital, Rs. 250/- per days maximum eligible to 30days.
Shipthara Scholarship Scheme
Selected 1014 Students who are living in poverty line have passed G.C.E. Ordinary Level (including Maths Subject) and are following G.C.E. Advanced Level can get rupees of 1500 per month for 2 years in the Shipthara Scheme.
